The year in review, part 4

And the final installment: October, November and December.

December - Missed Connections - A post about a girl who broke my heart while shopping for TVs. Most of you mocked this post, but I still love it. Jenna gets it. Go take a leap if you don't.

November - A Day In The Life of Lulu's Bitch - For ten days in late October and early November, I guest hosted Lulu's blog while she was away in Ireland. I had eleven posts as "Lulu's ManServant #1." This is the best of them.

October - Bookstore - A fiction post with an unusual layout.

And there you have it. The best of me, 2005.

Complaint Dept

What the fuck is with people who think I'd like to talk about their computer problems when I'm not at work?

Yes, I'm pleasant and witty when you call. Because I'm paid to be pleasant and witty. Stop me at a restaurant to ask why you can't change your desktop wallpaper and I just might stab you in the eye with a fork.

The year in review, part 3

Today's installment: August and September.

September #2 - The Adventures of A Kindergarten Dad - An autobiographical post about the first day The Chicken came home sick from school.

September #1 - Vacanigans, part 2 - An autobiographical post about housework as foreplay and the drunk girl at McDonald's on the second day of my vacation.

August - One for the time capsule - An exposition of Andy Capp funny books and how they've changed over the years. Also this blog's 200th post.

Dammit

So I have two alarm clocks, right? I have one of them set for 6:05 and the other for 6:12. When the first one goes off, I hit the snooze button and then they both go off at 6:12. And then I hit the snooze buttons again. And again.

Something was different this morning. I knew The Chicken doesn't have school, and I knew The Bunny is home (and awake) today. On days like that, I get an extra hour or so of sleep.

Did I remember that little detail even through my sleepy stupor? It must have been something like that because I hit those snooze buttons for a good solid hour before realizing it.

My first memory of this morning was waking to alarm #2 going off at 7:12. 7:12. That's not a typo. Both of my alarm clocks allow adjustment to only hours and minutes, so I've grown used to the fact that alarm #2 is about 15 seconds ahead of alarm #1. So when alarm #2 went off, I waited for alarm #1 to go off. It never did.

I got out of bed, hit the snooze on alarm #2 and crawled back into bed thinking, "Was I so out of it that I turned off alarm #1 without realizing it and repeatedly hit the snooze on alarm #2… in my sleep?"

Apparently I did. And apparently I was so out of it at that very moment that I'd also turned off alarm #2 without realizing it.

My second memory of this morning is Bunny waking me at 8:40. "Don't you have work today?"

Fuck. Work starts at 9:00.

I was in my office by 9:15, so that's not really a big deal. But I always feel that being late like this is a really bad omen for the rest of my day.

Today's word…

…that sounds really dirty but isn't: blunderbuss.

And I've used this word today.

Techie to English translator

I say: "Ok, then I'll give you a call as soon as I have some results for you."

I mean: "It's time for you to go now."

Today's lunch-time fortune

The kindness you once gave a friend will soon be returned.

Still geeking out

150 comic strips later I'm still reading Orneryboy. He and Dirtygirl have a pet zombie, you know.

The year in review, part 2

Today's installment: June and July.

July #2 - Manhattan Jasmine and The Canyon of Heroes (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4) - Not-so short fiction originally posted on Jasmine's blog. She solicited volunteers to guest post while she was spending all her free time studying for the New York bar exam. This was my contribution.

July #1 - The Cornrowed Hottie - An autobiographical, but ancient, story of a girl I met in my favorite bar.

June - Half-assed Entertainment Review: The Washingtonienne - The first full book review I've ever written. I'm still pretty proud of it.

I swear, he's speaking right to me

Have you seen the webcomic Orneryboy? I just stumbled onto it today, and I think I'm already hooked.

This strip in particular caught my eye.
