Using an oven is the most popular way to thaw and defrost a whole loaf of bread because it is quicker and the most efficient. It will also give you a nice, warm loaf that will taste and feel like it’s just been freshly baked. A whole loaf of bread can be defrosted in the oven at 325°F until soft and fully thawed in the middle, 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (about 162°C).
  • Take the bread out of the freezer and remove any plastic bags and other wrappings
  • Put the still-frozen loaf on the middle rack of the oven.
  • Set a timer for 20-30 minutes. This should be enough time for the bread to thaw and warm from crust to center.
  • Remove the loaf from the oven and let it sit on the counter for a few minutes until it cools to room temperature.

Using a Microwave

Slices of bread need another method to defrost. Because of their thinness, it will take less time to thaw slices of bread and to prevent it from burning.

Step 1: Prepare your slices. You will take out only the number of slices that you need because refreezing bread repeatedly can dry the bread out, making it hard and/or stale.

  • At room temperature, it can take up to three or four hours for a loaf of bread to fully defrost.
  • You can check when the bread is ready by using knife to cut off a slice if it is possible or gently squeeze the bread to see if it is soft enough
  • When it’s ready, it will be thawed out but may not be very warm. The crust may also lose its crispness, and if the bread was very moist it could become soggy or stale.
