Why do You Need Seasoning for Your Blackstone Griddle?
For one main reason – your food won’t stick to metal plates and make a mess. Also, a grill that was filthy and full of sticky crumbs and stains didn’t look good either. Oh and don’t forget – the oiled seasoning adds a richer flavor to every meal. It helps to lock the flavor in all dried meat vegetables. So take your oil out and let your grill blacken and season to perfection!
How to Season a Blackstone Griddle
Clean Your Grill with Water and Soap if it’s New
Fill a 2-liter (0.53 US gal) bucket with warm water. Add a little soap and then stir with a stick until the mixture is evenly mixed into the solution. Then, gently pour a small puddle of soapy water onto the grill. Take some paper towels and rub soap and water thoroughly all over the surface. Finally, wipe the surface of the grill with a clean paper towel until dry.
- Always wash a new grill with soap before use. This will remove the cooking oil that has been pre-seasoned to prevent damage and rust during shipping.
- If you’re seasoning an old grill, skip this step – soaping a used grill can actually damage the plate’s coating permanently.
Choose an Oil Rich in Fatty Acids to Coat Your Grilling Dish
Choose your favorite oil from the following high-fat options: vegetable shortening, vegetable oil, flax oil, extra virgin olive oil, and coconut oil. You can also use lard if desired.
- Always use oils that are high in fatty acids – stored as fat percentage on nutrition facts labels – for optimal adhesion to the grill.
- Avoid products with trans fatty acids, which have been linked to health problems like coronary heart disease, weight gain, and liver dysfunction.
Turn the Burner to Maximum Temperature and Wait for 10 to 15 Minutes
Locate your propane tank and turn it on by turning the valve counterclockwise. Now set the burner to the maximum possible temperature and wait. When you see the top of the grill begin to brown, you’re ready to move on to the next step!
- Wear heat resistant gloves for safety.
- Make sure your grill is completely dry before turning on the stove.
- For grills with specific temperature settings, turn the knob to 350°F (177°C).
Spread 2 to 3 Tablespoons (30 to 44 mL) of Oil on the Grill Surface
Adding oil will create a natural non-stick surface and add more flavor to your dish. Pour your favorite oil around the grill and spread it evenly over the surface with a paper towel. Use tongs to move the tissue if you feel your hands get hot. Bend over and check the oil from the side to see if it’s even.

Wipe the Edges, Sides and Corners of the Grill with Oil
Dab some oil on a piece of paper towel or use the same towel you used to wipe the surface. Now, use it to apply the oil to the rest of the grill around the top surface.

Let the Oil Cook for about 15 to 30 Minutes or Wait until it is Smoking
After turning the grill to maximum, the top plate will slowly turn black. Continue to wait until you see smoke starting to enter the air above the grill – this is called the “fuming point” and should happen after about 30 minutes. Once it happens, keep waiting until all the smoke is gone.
Turn off the Grill and Let Cool for 10 Minutes
When all the smoke is gone, turn off your grill. Once cooled, you have completed a seasoning turn. From here, you will continue to do so until the right spice level is reached.
- Hold your hand about 1 inch (2.5 cm) over the grate to see if it’s still hot.
Coat and Heat Your Grill 1 to 4 More Times or Until it is Dark Brown
Turn your grill back to maximum and reheat for another 10 to 30 minutes. Then, spread an even layer of oil on top and wait for the smoke point again. Continue doing this until the top of the blister turns dark brown – about 2 to 3 times that’s fine.
Mix your oils to create different flavor combinations. For example, use extra virgin olive oil for the first two rounds and combine with coconut oil for the third round.
Wipe the Surface of the Grill with Cooking Oil to Finish
The final step is a quick wipe with an oil of your choice to prevent oxidation, also known as rust. Before placing in the stock, pour some oil on 2 to 3 paper towels and lightly wet the top of the grill.
- Remember to wait until the grill has cooled down before wetting it lightly.
Way to Clean a Blackstone Griddle
The next step is to clean immediately after cooking. Most people think that cleaning the grill is the hardest part. However, you just need the right tools to get the job done efficiently.
You should have a steel spoon, some paper towels, a scouring pad, cooking oil, and some hot water. Let the griddle cool after cooking. Then use a spatula to scrape the surface and wipe the surface with a paper towel. Now pour some hot water over the surface that is still slightly warm. Make sure not to use soap as hot water will remove hard residue at this stage.
